SCAM ALERT! Posing As 'Deaf Adoption Network'

Deaf Adoption Network is a legitmate service--operated by Colly Baird out of Sioux Falls, SD--which lists deaf children who are up for adoption. Unfortunately, however, there is a scam circulating where the instigators claim that DAN will pay out cash to anyone willing to handle donations made to DAN. Here's how it works, from firsthand experience (yes, I fell for it initially!).
  1. I responded to an ad on www.HireDeaf.com purporting to be from DAN, asking for people to help them collect donations.
  2. Several days later, I got an acknowledgment email from deaf_adoption2000@yahoo.com.
  3. Several more days later, another email states "A donation of $1800 will be mailed to you." Naturally, at that point, it was obviously a scam.
  4. Later, I got a check for $1800, made out to me.
  5. The next day, another email asks me to deduct $250 from the amount and refund the remainder, via wire transfer, to an address in Nigeria.

Of course, I haven't cashed the check. I filed a report with the SD Attorney General, but have not received a response to date. This posting is a reminder to all you good folk out there to beware of anything that sounds too good to be true!

Thanks for the heads up! May I suggest that the headline of this post be changed to "SCAM ALERT! Posing as Deaf Adoption Network" so that it does not look like DAN itself is running the scam?
