Quite an impassioned vlog! It was nice to see Nancy after all of those years. Glad to see she’s doing very well.

Geez! Audism was not supposed to exist here at Gallaudet. Realistically, it is happening here and it is getting really drastic. For instance, DPS took some swift actions without communicating with us (students). It was good to see you althrough.

Wonderful vlogs!! Be proud of your beliefs… don’t give up!
I am friends of many GU alumnis and I was duly under impression that signing was only used in the GU classrooms… but Nancy’s testimony has changed my perspective. Now I understand why many GU - ASL users are very frustrated. There should be an equal access for all… keep ASL on campus including instructors and “deaf rookies”…
I am really disappionted with the violence that happened yesterday — at the gates. Advance warnings should have happened, but… no…. where’s equal access for the protesters??
Unity for Galladuet!! Go Deaf Canada Go!!
Yours in Peace…

In the mid-60’s, when attending Gallaudet, teachers and students used sign language. Oral deaf students struggled. Fast forward to 2006, audism rules. We need to fix that! I agree wholeheartedly with Nancy.

Congratulations to any Deaf who stand up and continue to support ASL, Cultures, its
history, etc….I agreed fully with what she said clearly…Soooo….Wake up Hearing people to look at what Deaf means to explain
thier feelings and they do hold thier values, precious importants for future deaf generations…ASL is Deaf”s langauge why must you destroy it????? Like you cannot destory another country’s language too??thank you! If you cannot learn but go for it and learn with enjoyment!!

Surprised about this problem with students not signing and just talking to the teacher and teacher replying without signing. Never dreamed it would happen at Gallaudet University. Nancy is right !!
November 6, 2006 at 10:28 pm
Call wake up!!! I totally agree with you Nancy Travis!!!!! If not for Gallaudet University I would not be here today! I have no idea where will I be ???? That is a big question for me to anwer???
At the bottom line is I am very grateful that I am part of Gallaudet University for the rest of my life! It is our job to fight and stand up for what we believe!
The fact is we do lost the battle in any general but ASL always win at the war with guarantee!!!
You have to think very harder what Our brothers Martin Luther King Sr, Malcom X, and Ghandi went through and challenged so we should do the same thing what they did!

I agree with Nancy. Remember all way back in 1864, Abraham Lincoln signed to provide education for all DEAF people and opened Gallaudet College. Look at hearing boards, teachers and other administrators may know a little or nothing about sign language. What a SHAME to them. Please be respect and fair for deaf students to have their chance using ASL sign language for their education. Please remove these people who don’t use sign language from Gallaudet University IMMEDATELY.

agree with you 100%

I agree with Nancy and everyone else who put comments here. If you don’t use sign, then you dont’ belong at Gallaudet University. Go to your local College and take classes there. There has to be a college near the “hearing” student where he can take the courses offered at Gallaudet someplace else. Gallaudet should only allow people who communicate with ASL in the classrooms. Why take time away from the deaf students who are there to learn, to talk to a hearing student.? That is not fair at all.

I am not a Gallaudet alumini and I support ASL for the deaf and I support the deaf. Way to go and keep up with it and hopefully the deaf can win. It is not fair to leave the deaf out. Deaf people are not stupid. I grew up in a hearing world and I had gone thru many obstacle and it was a hard struggling for me. I encourage all the deaf to fight for thier rights. Let deaf have Gallaudet not hearing people to take over. This college belong to the deaf community…

I am 100% agree with Sharoon Brooker, what she said. Dont let hearing peoples run over deaf people’s right.

I agreed with the student talking about Gally. I supported full deaf students and ASL. And so many things about deaf cultures, I supported as I am deaf. Our daughter is interpreter and supported deafies, too.

I agreed fully about the situation of Gally.

Definitely 150 percent agreed! Nancy Blanchard! Eloquently ASL signed! She’s right about those deaf of hearing parents who went to residental school gets their “Deafhood” meaning Deaf Culture, Deaf way, history, ASL word/language play, and other relating things are included in this new vocabulary. It’s critical for all Deaf/HOH people to have this “Deafhood”. Without it, then they would be like hearing “robots” to comply with hearing people’s thoughts on “superiority” of speech then suffer years of loss of identity. That would be so sad. As myself as a Deaf individual of hearing family, I consider ASL as a critical language need for me in all areas of my life..meaning social, academic, and so on. I also stress on the equalivent status of ASL and English. I’m for bilingual approach in educating all Deaf from infancy to adults. When I say English, I’m not talking about learning how to speak…I am talking about learning how to read and write through ASL period. We need full recognition for the Deaf/HOH people and allow them this access to Deafhood and the natural language of ASL! We need this to be respected at Gallaudet University without a question.
I’m really disappointed to know that there are still some deaf/HOH people talking with teachers without signing and that it is still happening. I’ve seen it happened from 1999 to 2003 when I was a student at Gallaudet. I even asked some people to sign and sometimes I get scorned or experienced hostility from them. I don’t blame them really and they’re taught that speech is superior and trying to adhere the idea that hearing is better while they’re actually deaf or HOH.
I agree with Nancy and that it is time for a change. This change need to be with respect and peace and honor Deaf peoples’ needs.
Thank you, Nancy Blanchard for Signing it out loud!

Hooray for Nancy for speaking out bravely..I am an ole man now and I always blame Gallaudet for closing School for the Deaf in some states which need Gallaudet’s help to no avail.Thank you again, Nancy

I read some of the posts and I think it is a great place! I can be secretive about my booze exposure Do you want a fresh joke from net? What did the elephant say to the naked man? It’s cute, but can you pick up peanuts with it?
