Hunger Strike Protesters on Liquids Only
The Gallaudet University posted a statement that the hunger strike protesters are substaning on liquids, juicies, chicken brooth, and high protein energy drinks. I know for sure that is not true.
I asked several protesters last Sat and they told me all they drink are liquids, fruit and vegetable juices, and chicken broth. That is all. I remember several protesters offering them soup with vegetables and meat in it and they politely declined the offers. Similar offers for more substantial meals were also turned down.
I went inside their supply tent and I didn’t see any high energy protein drinks.

Thanks MZ for the facts! IKJ and JFK better be very concerned about them not having the proteins such as Boost for a while since the hunger strikes started. The body needs the protein!!
They might get the wrong info from the health workers who checked on the hunger strike protestors recently.
Well, perhaps Jordan and Fernandes should go there and visit them. They knew about the hunger strike for at least a week and they didn’t even bother to stop by at all.
Have they beem taking liquid vitamin supplements? That will help prevent the body from breaking down and helping them while on hunger strike. Yes it will cost, but better than nothing! Also folks need to get them Boost. What about smoothies? (smashed fruit, milk, protein shakes) That is not solid food, but still a thought!
Based on the information provided, this is not actually a hunger strike, this is more of a liquid diet. The body will still receive nutrients (though in a different form than perhaps normal), and be able to be sustained. The participants will probably lose a little weight, but unless they stop taking in nutrient-bearing fluids (broths, fruit juices, protein drinks…)the body is in no great peril.

From the examples shown, you can see what people have done, and how fatal true hunger strikes can be. I am not condoning or suggesting to follow the examples of Bobby Sands et al. Being in a truly perilous situation with a hunger strike may get a reaction, though it may invoke mental health specialists, as well. I’m NOT saying protesters have mental problems, just that that may be an administrative move.
However, so long as “they’re fine” and they’re in no apparant danger to themselves, I don’t see this causing more than a ripple. No offense intended, I just believe there are other tactics which would be more productive.
The best of health to those participating in this!
I understand about this; however, I worry a little about pure water they need to drink a lot of water to help clean toxic out, give oxygen and keep body in a good condition. It gives energy, also. For fasting it is the best way to drink herbal or tea, pure water, vegetable and fruit juice limited up to 40 days. It is a good benefit for physical, emotional and spiritual. I suggest them to have fasting up to three weeks. Be careful, they break a fasting, better start with fresh fruit to eat for one or two days, then eat soup or soft food in next few days and at last eat solid food like meat in six days later. If not, it could hurt stomach. If fasting after 40 days it is called malnutrient or starvation. I had been experience with juice, herbal and water drink for three weeks and saw a vison and increased my spirit strong close to God. Thanks, Susanne
no energy drinks? that’s a huge relief, because energy drinks can mess up the body’s delicate balance- it’s already harsh on a well-fed person so imagine how it’d affect someone who’s starving.
I second the herbal tea idea! also, they should look into adding vitamin water into their regiment- vitamin water tastes like extremely watered down koolaid only it has vitamins added
I worry about everyone who’s doing this.
btw mishka, I love your coverage of the protest… I check your blog more than once daily and I tell everyone to read your blog :). thank you for doing this- you’re helping the deaf community in so many different ways.
Hawk, their health has already been adversedly affected. You haven’t seen them like I did and it was bad. Ambulances were summonded two days ago.
tomorrow will be their 12th day.

Sorry, I was not insinuating there was NO effect. You’re right, I have not personallyseen them,. Moreso that under the current diet, the desired result is highly unlikely. As long as the students are getting nutrieents, and are “checking out ok” with healcare type folks, they can just as easily be swept under the carpet, or disregarded. They’re not in immediate peril, and if they were deemed to be, most likely Mental Health would be called in to “prevent their self-destructive behavior” or some such line. Personally, that’s not a road that I would choose to take, but you have to admire the determination of the folks going through this.
It’s just my opinion, hopefully it wasn’t misread as being against the movement, just not an approach that strikes me as being the solution, after all we’ve seen so far.
