Poppi’s Response To Jane Norman’s Letter
Dr. Norman:
Appreciate your taking the time to write. I personally have no personal dislike for Dr. fernandes. However, we must listen to the people she is supposed to lead. I’d be curious to know what your reaction is regarding the recent communication from the Laurent Clerc Center teachers and staff?
Second, it is one thing to call on colleagues to join you in validating a flawed process. But using a convincing and peaceful strategy is another.
Dr. Norman, as much as I respect you, I would like to point out that:
- Dr. Jordan has publicly insulted the deaf community
- Dr. Fernandes has publicly insulted this community. She just repeated her insult by calling the protesters “terrorists” (the use of terrorism applied to protesters) and is, unarguably unacceptable and a dangerous path that any wise leader should not cross.
- Re-read your own message and you’ll see that, though you end the message with with “God bless Gallaudet and peace,” you have used a language that knows no peace. You call protesters mobs? Since you supported DPN in 1988, were you a mob? Was King a mob?
- Management By Intimidation is not loosely used, Dr. Norman. It is not even or solely used by dissenters. It is one of the Gallaudet administration’s UGLY faces and practices. It is a brutal and sad reality.
- I am the one whose one of your hearing friends in Jordan’s administration talked to when he said that “technology is not for deaf people,” Dr. Norman! Believe it or not, this massive insult will ring in my deaf ears even after God summons me back to Him. And anyone who dares insult a people–and deaf people–so massively, so brutally ought to be kicked out of Gallaudet! Instead, King and his administration reward such individuals by keeping and even giving them prominent positions. None within the deaf community with a keen, authentic love for Gallaudet and the deaf, would tolerate such mental assassination. I haven’t seen anything yet in Dr. fernandes that shows that she is willing to clean. Since King is the one imposing her to Gallaudet community, it is likely that she will keep such apostles of negativism, destructionism of the deaf. To me, it is scary and unacceptable.
Kindest regards!
Poppi

I do not support Jane but not only Jane called terrorist to the protests.
All of people who do not support protest, do not support protest way, and are neutral called terrorist to the protesters.
Audism is in the eye of the beholder and all too frequently, intellectual terror and vituperation are branded against anyone who does not expressly support the protest. I find the protesters so convinced of their own righteousness that they fail entirely to see the other side.
It is very unfortunate that cynical observer isn’t able to see the serious problem Audism plaguing the campus. Even Jordan and Fernandes admitted it is a legitimate issue so did the deaf people with oral backgrounds and hearing members of Gallaudet community
I don’t see the protesters terrorizing others. They didn’t put down Earth liquid on the ground the same day students were permitted to assemble, didn’t sic DPS to brutalize on harmless and peaceful student, not did they call MPD to arrest students for exercising something that was lauded in 1988, the courage to stand up against oppression. They didn’t threaten BoT.
