Wednesday's Updates from our Locals in DC!

From Matilda Lonn

Hello,
I guess I was too optimistic yesterday with my comments after Michael's sent article that was more positive than what we got in the past and that the fac votes showed clearly that Jane doesn't have enough strong support. I don't understand why she still is so stubborn and wants to lead even though there are not many supporters behind her back - not only her, I. King Jordan too.... This is soooo fishy... Why do they still want to lead if there are no enough supporters?
Well - let's not give up! Once again, thank you for all your work! As many already mentioned - continue to do our part; donate, call, write, go to Gally, etc...
Last but not least - more and more international people are also reacting and involved! I got this email forwarding from international friends and the letter was made by some Canadians. I tried to forward the email first two days ago but it didnt go through and I didnt understand why until now - oh, it contained too much memory due to a picture they had on their logo so I am now removing that logo in order to be able copying their letter for you to read... (Now I hope there will be some involvement from Sweden as well!) Read below – ((Editorial Notes: Matilda is from Sweden. The Canadian letter can be found on the gufssa.com site.))

I finally found a great source of media contact. please if you hear anything that needs to be reported to the media, contact me asap and I'll contact the media... please feel forward to everybody (I've given up my privacy regarding my personal e mail).. any emergency, formal public updates, etc, just let me know . my e mail addy is _shasus@aol.com_
Reason I'm doing this: media gets limited information and often only when the interpreters are there, this is much faster and to 50 reporters. I'm very aggressive, keeping reporting to the media.

I'm with you.
They truly need $$$$ and people!
1) Not that I know of. Rory is gonna contact Levinson on his behalf as he requested to be in touch w Rory.
2) I gave my slot to tom/rory and tom is working on scheduling. I also informed them that stefanie wants to join. If anything contact either one of them! Do still encourage more appts to be made w both. More voice heard, the better.
3) DONATE cash to colin or any of guaa members. Also can give $ to melinda or maureen as well. Or use paypal on gufssa.org
4) do a pizza night or something. Ask local pizzeria or like baja fresh who also does fundraisers... Etc? Just an idea.
I'll gather more info once I'm in DC tonight.
We need bodies. Come if you can!
We need $$$. Donate all you can!

PAH! News from GU!
*For those of you wondering why no news came from me the past two days, take a look @ Genie's, Ella's, and my Deafhood presentation sked: Tues Oct. 18th, 9-11 AM, 12-2 PM, 3-5 PM, 6-8 PM and Wed Oct 19th, 9:30-11:30 AM!!!!!!!! So u see, we didn't have much free time here. Anyway, the asl/Deaf Studies, Education, and Counseling Departments all sponsored the workshop. MJ and Laurene were especially GREAT hosts- they took care of GG, Ella, and me!
*Many stuff- most notably everybody's SO impressed w/ the Bay Area! Grin and- even more important--- our Deafhood presentation helped convert some anti-protest students! Yay! And most of the workshops were packed.
*Mon night I was astonished to see how good MJ looked. I commented on that, and she credited her visit to the Bay Area- it helped give her a 2nd wind!
*Good news- the protest is MUCH MUCH stronger, organized, and fired-up than last May! Everybody's now jumping in, including the wonderful faculty. There are many wonderful leaders- Tara Holcomb, MJ, Laurene, Chris Corrigan, Jesse Thomas, Latoya Plummer, etc- but wow the STUDENTS really took over the protest. We thanked them for taking care of our home, Gallaudet! A lot will happen this week- more walk-outs, shut-downs, and a huge march- plus faculty will continue to confront Irving and Jane.

Want share that GUKCC apparently was told not to let alumni register for room there eeven tho there shd be about 20 rooms left. Understand JKF has been sleeping there on same floor as our room! (4th room)...heard she hasn't been home the past 2 weeks except for 2 nights.
Photocopy or words of memo found there will be posted in a blog...maybe gufssa...tonight...discriminatory!

the general idea of the rally....
announced we no longer recognize king as our univ president
parents making comments..
zibby: flew from california 3k miles to support our children... want to show 100% support... parents had meeting this morning will have meeting tmr with king
question: sorenson willing to get 5milion back???
sorenson: we focus on deaf ppl needs... need vp access, need
interpreter.... the 5 millions is different level from sorenson....
we will postpone that ceremony for groundbreaker.... dunno when
ryan commerson: we think everyone needs to undyu why sorenson provide interpreters cuz we need communication access... sicne pr office say no to pay for gis to provide interpreters....
everyone cheered
we are suffering the oppression and injustice from the university so
that's the purpose of the sorenson's involvement.....
rally over...

press release
gallaudet university
oct 17 2006
11 30pm
dr jordan,
in your public relations campagin against gu student, fac, alumni,
others, you asked whether students shld be allowed to take over the
university. this question is ridiculous. of course, none of us think
the students shld take over the university
by this strategy, you are engaging in a clever media campaign geared to portray serious community concerns only as agrouip of unruly students instigated by a small group of disgruntled faculty. your campagin is designed to divert the public from the real issues of the protest and its both insulting and unfair.
it is you who are instiigating the students by your refusakl to open
your eyes and mind to the many voices that are beseeching you to addres real issues. these issues have been repeatedly raised before you not only by students, but by faculty, alumni, staff, clerc teachers and staff, parents, friends of gallaudr. even your longtime friends and colleagues are imploring you to end this tragedy by acknowledging jane fgernandeas cannot lead this university.
dr jordan, please cease this reprehensible public relation campaign. it wrongly portrays our students who care deeply for gallaudet's future. it is seriously damaging the integrity of th university, the future opportunities for deaf people.
there is only one issue before us now: jane fernandes does not have the suppot of the faculty, students, alumni, and staff of gallaudet
university, and thus, there is no hope that she can lead this university.
stakeholders united for gallaudet.
*(sorry abt typos... am typing from what the flyer is being
distributed) thumbs tired hahaah
