What's that you said?
this and that
new vlog!
OK, I want to highlight a vlog that I absolutely adore!

In this day and age of vlogs, I've been largely shut out. To begin with go here pick out a vlog at random and just see how long it takes to find one that's captioned. Ironically enough, neither can I make heads or tails of this vlog or this one or this one. They all look substantially interesting, but I haven't a clue what exactly is said. In fact, there's many Deaf arguing that subtitles shouldn't be a big consideration in ASL vlogs. Makes me want to scream, I tell you.

But this guy gets it right! And while he talks about some deaf issues, which I think is perfectly reasonable, heck I do too, his vlogs are largely reviews of shows and such -- I liked his review of Jericho, and I'm going to try and get copies of it to watch now.

Yay!

In particular, I'm very pleased that Google has made it so easy to subtitle videos AND that they brought out YouTube, so that should be added to YouTube soon as well. YES!

 Thanks for the positive feedback!
Browneyedgirl65,

I'm glad that you adored my vlog entries. It's part of my philosophy that I make my blog accessible to both the deaf and the hearing.

I can understand how you get frustrated when you view vlogs where there's no subtitles. I do feel somewhere disappointed when I watch vlog entries where the hearing people are talking and there's no subtitle option for me to turn on.

Thanks for letting people know that there are some deaf bloggers out there who believe in breaking down the communication barriers by doing the same in return for the hearing.

It's a two-way street. :-)

Re: Thanks for the positive feedback!
Oh, I know *exactly* how you feel when you see a non-captioned hearing vlog. As a non-signing deaf, I get both ends of the "non-captioning barrel". Bah.

But yeah, I'm going to check out Jericho, thanks for the tip ;-)

 Captioned vLogs
Roger, Joey! You said it all in your comment left on ASC blog site.

I would like to make an additional statement. I must say that captioning is a laborious task. Many of us, deaf vloggers are not professional. We produce amateurish videos. Most B-List, indie, or short movies are not CAPTIONED! As of those videos being created by professionals, and distributed by major studios are expected to be captioned, since they have the kind of time and money. We do not! What's more, we the deaf people do not expect hearing vloggers to caption their videos. Most vlogs out there in the blogsphere are created based on the basis of personal website. PERSONAL, not PROFESSIONAL such as CNN, FOX, and so on.

A While ago, I replied to someone who sent a comment to me -- asking if I would consider captioning my vlogs. Here is the comment I made;

Anonymous,

I wish I have ample time to caption the video. I did the captioning for one of my vlogs at the end of its video -- imprinting brief captions on the images. It was a laborious task. Captions appeared on the screen tended to be off timing. It was very annoying! I am not an expert!

I use iMovie for quick editing job. I guess I do not have a sophiscated captioning software. I am not sure about Final Cut. I do use it sometime for more elaborated projects. I believe it has the capability of adding subtitles. I will experiment when I have a chance. Maybe I ought to ask Jared Evans to give me tips.

Sorry for not being able to meet everyone's needs. I will keep that in mind for the futrue vlogs (short ones, maybe).

Bear with us, vloggers. (deaf amateur vloggers)

By the way, this is Teri. Thank you for your interest in my blog site, and referring my site to your discourse.

Hope it helps give you a bigger picture.

If you check, I already referenced that link.

There's an essential problem here. I've already been glibly told in that same thread "Oh go learn ASL, then it's no problem. [And you won't be bitter]" Oh boy.

I think you can see that this is as potentially difficult as a non-english comfortable ASL signer to figure out the subtitles in an ASL vlog.

There's no happy medium, unfortunately. So I will wind up ditching your vlogs and paying more attention to vlogs like Banjo's. It's not really my choice. Nor is it yours. If I do decide to learn ASL, it will be years anyway before I have a level of proficiency to follow it.

Whatever. Just please, please, don't label your vlogs as "accessible to all". I've seen that in a couple of places, and they are not. They are ASL only -- fine. Just don't mislead.

Yes, you can simply shrug off like we do when we first see videos (personal ones) with no captions. No Big Deal!

CNN? FOX? NBC? That's BIG deal! A total different story! It says all.

Gotcha!?!?

Yeah, and THOSE guys will just apply to FCC for exemptions! Pfft.

Hearies can ask deafies for captions, deafies can ask hearies for captions, and me! I'm extra special! I get to ask for captions from everybody!

Ah well. Pax and all that. Maybe somewhere in this orange county wasteland there's a decent ASL class or two.

Saddleback College has a wonderful ASL program. They have many deaf instructors. The tuition is pretty cheap. The last time I went there taking several web development courses. It costed me only 22 dollars per credit. Also, try Irvine Valley College or Riverside Community College. ASL classes tend to be fun! :)
