Rob interviewed by BBC Access 2.0 blog
Grumpy Old Deafies Rob got interviewed over on the BBC's Access 2.0. Its good to get some coverage, and I have to congratulate the BBC for showing initiative here. Question: why does the BBC have to call us hearing impaired, especially when Rob has used 'Deaf' throughout his interview answers? Note to Rob: you've been vlogging since June 2004.

Unit 1 Lesson 2
You Have to Be Deaf Steve and I go to Sacrament Meeting. The opening hymn is Count Your Blessings. "When upon lifeīs billows you are tempest tossed...." I am immediately listening to the words, and my spirit is lifted. Itīs good to go to church. Later, Steve and I head off to teach our Sign class. Wow, what a difference it is to have him in the class. The objectives for Unit 1, Session 2 [...]

For RidorLive - re: Paris Hilton .. It is NOT Deaf related...
Here I am ... It is not Deaf related but ..... I don't feel sorry for Paris who is in prison because she violates the probation. Paris must be treated the same as many of us. Paris can survive there -- Psych and Medication services are there for her. Think of Deaf and Hard of Hearing inmates with a lack of communication. It is unfortunate. I don't feel bad for them but the lack [...]

Unit 1 Lesson 2 Preparations
You Have to Be Deaf After the fun discussion here about my first Sign class, I ask Steve the question about fingerspelling that a couple of people brought up during the class. The question was in regard to whether the fingers should be pointing sideways or forward when signing the letters G, H, P, and Q. He says the fingers should be pointing forward. This little exchange as well as [...]

When Adversity Turns Into a Blessing
Karen Stephen Hopson, over at Adversity University, has tagged me for a post on the Secrets of Overcoming Adversity. I thought I'd share about a tough time in my life which actually turned into a blessing:I grew up as a "solitaire", a term that Gina Oliva, author of Alone in the Mainstream uses to describe a deaf or hard of hearing child who is the only one in a school of [...]

Trial and Tribualtion
MM's BLOGALOG Terminological warfare has been waged for aeon's, but has the new upsurge of political correctness, and the drive for ultimate and equal rights for deaf and HI people, suddenly turned it all into some idealogical warfare too ? Chinese censors mistakingly blocked all references to communism and communist rule in China last year, on the net, in a bid to ensuring the [...]

ASL vloggers and DeafRead in Wall Street Journal
Jared Evans I have been waiting for the Wall Street Journal article about ASL vlogs. It finally came out today!I particularly enjoyed this article because few ASL vloggers were mentioned. There is also a short subtitled video clip where the reporter interviews Austin Andrews of the Deaf Ninja fame. It shows that ASL can be mastered by both the Deaf and [...]

Hey Deafhood Workshop Staff... about Deaf Children and Deaf...
Indiana Deaf Mother's Babblings Hey, Ella, Genie, DE, Paddy Ladd, and whoever are leading Deafhood Workshops... I have been hearing and reading about Deafhood Workshops. I have yet to attend one... will do when it comes to Indianapolis :o). Anyway, it seems to me that the workshops are centered to the deaf adults... what about deaf children/deaf youths? Accents
Bionic Ear What American accent do you have? Deaf, of course, but that wasn't an option and it didn't stop me from completing the quiz. The site identified my accent as Midland: You have a Midland accent is just another way of saying "you don't have an accent." You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, [...]

Lisa A. Goldstein - HAL Joins MI5
i711.com : Deaf News This Week Lip reading software tools have been around for a little while. But greater accuracy, made possible by new technology, has brought these tools to the attention of the British Secret Service, which is using them to screen conversations of criminal suspects. Differences Between Deaf and deaf.
The Talkie Since Ben Vess suggested I do it, here it is. When I first became involved in learning about people who were deaf, I had no idea what made people Deaf. I was, of course, too proud to ask Ben, so I read around until I figured it out. People who are deaf have some level of hearing loss, people who are Deaf were raised within the Deaf community and share a culture with [...]

"Not Deaf Enough"
Der Sankt Speaks... Earlier this morning I was having a conversation with a cute boy about Gallaudet and Deaf culture in general and I came to a realization–Jane had it wrong, it isn't that she wasn't "Deaf enough," but I wouldn't be too hasty to say that her fluency in American Sign Language wasn't a factor. Now, this seems like a taboo subject [...]

Why use ASL Gloss?
Triomphe L'oeil Why use ASL Gloss? Obviously, videos are the best way to capture ASL narrative and record it for all posterity. However, I know that digital videos have a definite lifespan and such works may be lost forever. Here's a couple of examples; The video hosting provider could go out of business; (Yes, even Google Video/YouTube are not immune from market forces!) The hard [...]

Introducing Sign Snarlisms!
Triomphe L'oeil Introducing Sign Snarlisms! This isn't a video entry, but it would be nice to see a couple of video responses! My apologies for not producing any video clips lately. Real Life(tm) has a way of intruding, which I'm sure you all all but too familiar with. Anyway, sign this sentence very, very fast! ;) (The words in parenthesis are normally not signed in ASL.) * We [...]
