The Salt Lake Valley (Deaf) 2nd Ward
You Have to Be Deaf Steve and I decide to attend the 2nd ward to see what it is like compared to the 1st ward. From my perspective there is not much difference except that the 2nd ward has about twice as many people as the 1st ward. When compared with the hearing ward in which we have been attending for [...]

The Deaf Ward Part 2
You Have to Be Deaf Steve again agrees to go with me to the Deaf ward. Several people who want to know if we have decided to attend this ward on a regular basis warmly greet us. Of course my answer is “yes” and “I hope”. I chat briefly with Pat Walker and we agree that attending this ward would [...]

The Deaf Ward
You Have to Be Deaf It’s been a while since I’ve written anything, so I thought it would be fun to write about my experience in the Salt Lake Deaf 1st Ward last Sunday (and hope I don’t step on anyone’s toes). Let me preface this story by explaining why I have decided to attend the Deaf ward on a [...]

Interpreters in Church
You Have to Be Deaf Our sister missionary is still interpreting for Steve until she heads off to school in January. She has decided to become a certified interpreter. A good friend of hers, who lives near us, just got off of a deaf mission and she will be taking Rachel's place interpreting for Steve. We also still have Karen, [...]

Health Screening
You Have to Be Deaf As part of Steve´s health insurance, we were required to have a health screening. I elected to have my screening done at his place of work. Here is how it went (and I think this is somewhat ethical for a person who has no training in ethics). As I am sitting outside the conference room where the screenings were being performed, I chat with another wife of an employee....

Awareness is Bliss
You Have to Be Deaf Sunday Morning - I am feeling mentally exhausted at the thought of going to church today. It seems that I should be feeling happy to go since Sister Marshall will be there to interpret for Steve. It would be another rare opportunity to sit in church and feel relaxed. But after the final letdown in finding a qualified interpreter, I feel I am headed for a breakdown. [...]

Learn by Watching
You Have to Be Deaf This post is actually in response to Mrs D's comment on my previous post (thanks Mrs D for getting my mind on the positive side of our challenges.) Last Sunday was a rare good day in Church for me. You would have to ask Steve how he felt about it, but I believe he enjoyed it. Sister Marshall returned from her Deaf mission last Wednesday, so she was in church [...]

Save Us from Ignorance
You Have to Be Deaf July 1 - Out of the ten people who attended the Sign Language class previously, 5 show up along with a couple of children. The task is to give them a test on what they have learned so far. It ends up being a review of what they should have learned so far. July 8 - Four people show up for the class today. These are not the same people as last Sunday. What are the odds [...]

Unit 1 Lesson 3
You Have to Be Deaf I go to Relief Society today and the first thing that is asked is if we are going to have Sign class today since it is Father´s Day, and this person would not be able to come. I had already said that we would to another person who asked me. So I said, "Yes we will have it, even if only one person shows up." Then another person asked me and said she would not be able [...]

Aptitudes and Abilities
You Have to Be Deaf I neglected to mention in the previous post about the little argument that occurred during class about whether or not I am a Sign Language interpreter. Perhaps I just needed to think about it more so I could explain it logically and not emotionally. My inability to interpret for Steve in church was one of things that I discussed with our chorister sister after Relief [...]

LDS Distribution Center, Red Wing Shoes, and Cracker Barrel
You Have to Be Deaf I discovered an LDS ASL Interpreter´s Discussion Board on the internet (another prayer answered). Since I have been racking my brain about how to teach the Young Women Theme in sign, I wrote a message and asked how would be the best way to do that. I also asked another question that I will save for tomorrow´s post about our Sign class. I would like to give this man, [...]

The Great Job Hunt Chapter 2
You Have to Be Deaf As my planned career in Neon is going nowhere, I decided to try to return to my former trade of woodworking. My Voc Rehab counselor told me that her office had placed someone at an company in SLC. She called them asked if they were still hiring, they said yes, so my counselor arranged for an Sign Interpreter to be there today for the application/interview process. [...]

Unit 1 Lesson 2
You Have to Be Deaf Steve and I go to Sacrament Meeting. The opening hymn is Count Your Blessings. "When upon life´s billows you are tempest tossed...." I am immediately listening to the words, and my spirit is lifted. It´s good to go to church. Later, Steve and I head off to teach our Sign class. Wow, what a difference it is to have him in the class. The objectives for Unit 1, Session 2 [...]

Unit 1 Lesson 2 Preparations
You Have to Be Deaf After the fun discussion here about my first Sign class, I ask Steve the question about fingerspelling that a couple of people brought up during the class. The question was in regard to whether the fingers should be pointing sideways or forward when signing the letters G, H, P, and Q. He says the fingers should be pointing forward. This little exchange as well as [...]

Unit 1 Lesson 1
You Have to Be Deaf I place two rows of chairs in a semi-circle. Ten people signed up for the class and ten more show up including children and young adults. Each family gets a book and other materials (not free). Everyone wants to know if Steve is coming. He is not this time but I will try to get him to join us next time. I explain that I chose the Sign Language Made Simple curriculum [...]

Sign Language Class Preparations
You Have to Be Deaf This coming Sunday I teach my first Sign Language class. Now keep in mind as you read this post that I do not teach classes. I taught a Relief Society class many years ago for a few weeks, and once I tried to teach the Sunbeams (5 year olds). That lasted three weeks and then I was released from the calling after allowing the kids to run around in the church halls [...]

A Day at the Movies
You Have to Be Deaf Steve and I usually do not go out to movies for obvious reasons (to a deaf person). We wait for the movie to come out on DVD. As far as I know there is one open captioned theater in Salt Lake City at the Ritz in West Valley City. We get our information from [link] The Megaplex 20 in South Jordan has this new technology where a person can read the closed captions [...]

Learn Sign Language and Deaf Culture
You Have to Be Deaf Prior to last Sunday, I decided I needed to get some people in the ward learning about Deaf Culture and Sign Language. After doing a bit of research on the internet, I came up with a list of options that people could choose from and created a handout and sign up sheet. I had not looked at some of these materials, so was going with my guts here. Included on the list [...]

Jimmy Neon - Not as Expected
You Have to Be Deaf After having a good night's sleep after talking with my Vocational Rehab Counselor yesterday, I awoke this morning with the realization that I had been used, lied to, and just plain ripped off by this Jimmy Neon character. I brought my counselor pictures of the conditions up there at Jimmy's "training school" in WA state. She looked at them and [...]

A Deaf Centered Relationship
You Have to Be Deaf I came across this article titled "Marriage Between Deaf and Hearing Persons". I think that having a deaf centered relationship will be fairly easy for Steve and I to develop. The challenge now is correcting the mistakes I've made in the last seven years with our hearing friends. How do you have a deaf centered relationship in a hearing ward? [...]

A Burden is Lifted
You Have to Be Deaf Yesterday I showed Steve the comment by Jenny (#6). He agrees that he needs to attend more functions in the Deaf Community and associate more with deaf people. I ask him again in sign, "Then why you not want go Deaf Ward?" He says he will tell me later. I sit at my computer and do a little work. Without thinking, I tell him that it's ok if he does [...]

"Stop Talking, Idiot"
You Have to Be Deaf This classic blurb is the last thing said on the episode of Scrubs titled, "My Words of Wisdom". In this episode, a deaf boy is sick in the hospital and the doctors wants to give him a cochlear implant to help restore his hearing. The boy's father who is also deaf does not want him to have this implant. The doctors have trouble understanding his [...]

"Stop Talking, Idiot" (from an episode of Scrubs)
You Have to Be Deaf Last night Steve comes home from his adventures with Jimmy Neon. I am happy to see him and have him back. Of course he wants to tell me everything. As is his usual form, he talks....a lot. I am trying to listen but my mind and body is in burnout mode from learning about the world of the Deaf, trying to help my hearing friends understand, and feeling that everyone [...]

Accomodating the Deaf
You Have to Be Deaf "...it would be just as hard to find a typical deaf person as it would be to find a typical hearing person. Consequently, there is no one approach to dealing with hearing impairment that will serve everyone affected." This statement comes from the article "A Language beyond Sound: Making the Gospel Available to the Hearing-Impaired". Even [...]

Abduction onto EYEth
You Have to Be Deaf I modified the previous two posts a little to try and make them more clear. It is somewhat of a nightmare writing this blog and helping people understand. One thing I'm learning is how complicated being deaf is. It is far more than not being able to hear. When people ask me questions about Steve (which they should be asking him as well), they must understand [...]

Destination EARth or EYEth?
You Have to Be Deaf Man is such a crazy fool, When it's hot, he wants it cool. When it's cool, he wants it hot; Always wanting what it's not. This is one of the first poems my mother taught me when I was little. It's a simple little poem with a powerful lesson, and it has stuck with me all of my life. Our new home teacher and his wife come over to visit with me [...]

More on Destination EYEth
You Have to Be Deaf The Lord works in very mysterious ways sometimes. One thing that has been so frustrating for me is helping people understand why attending church is hard for Steve and I. People make assumptions based on their own beliefs, experiences, and expectations. It is hard enough when the assumptions are directed towards a hearing person who lives on EARth. What they do not [...]

Prime motivation to get a CI is employment!
You Have to Be Deaf I met with the signing teller and her husband last night, and had pizza with them. It seems that the husband has worked as a Seaman for the local ferry to Seattle for many years. He is progressively becoming more and more deaf. They wanted to ask me questions about my Cochlear Implant. I showed them the CI device, told them my experiences and they took notes because [...]
