Bilingualism ayala920's Xanga When I was a Gallaudet student I heard a lot about "bilingualism." Gallaudet, in an effort to comply with MSCHE's accreditation standards, is in the process of making the university “bilingual.” To do this, they've begun providing ASL interpretations of many of the written announcements on the website, such as the website for the new SLCC... Tue, May 20 2008 Wednesday, February 07, 2007 ayala920's Xanga For those of you who have somehow missed the boat on the live webcasts of hockey games at the 2007 Winter Deaflympics, check out DeafNation TV's live coverage of hockey games this week. I'm still upset that I wasn't able to fly out to Salt Lake City for the Deaflympics, as I work with the hockey team at the week-long Stan Mikita Hockey School every year, but at least [...] Wed, Feb 07 2007 A rare venting session ayala920's Xanga I don't typically use this blog to vent. Really, I don't often use it for much of anything. However, today has proven a difficult day for me, and I figured that Xanga was a good substitute for an ear or an eye.I am a hearing student at Gallaudet University, which I'm sure anyone reading this already knows. What most people don't know is how and why I came to be [...] Thu, Jan 25 2007 BoT ayala920's Xanga Board of Trustees to meet SaturdayThe board will meet in a special executive session this Saturday, November 11, at the Kellogg Conference Hotel. The purpose of the meeting is twofold: * To discuss the appointment of an interim president for the University * To discuss matters related to internal board governance The first part of the meeting will involve discussions [...] Tue, Nov 07 2006 Big day ayala920's Xanga Yesterday about 200 of us took charter buses to the Dulles Airport Hotel, where it's rumored the Board of Trustees is meeting this weekend. The hotel employees refused to allow us inside, but did set aside a small area for us to stand for a short time. The police were there long before we were, so it's obvious they knew we were coming.Today we may hear an [...] Sun, Oct 29 2006 Another disasterous day... ayala920's Xanga Students sleeping in tents at the MSSD gate were woken up this morning to bulldozers pushing their tents and belongs out of the way. I couldn't believe my eyes when I read this in a message, but it's been confirmed. DPS and the PPD broke through the gate this morning and bulldozed the area, including tents with people sleeping inside. The front lawn is now covered [...] Wed, Oct 25 2006 College Hall lockdown ayala920's Xanga College Hall was locked down once again last night at approximately 12:30 am. But it appears that the lockdown has already ended.Personally, I didn't support the lockdown of College Hall. I understand the frustrations many students have because of the lack of concern from the administration, but locking down College Hall was not the answer. Protestors have been [...] Wed, Oct 25 2006 8 PM Rally ayala920's Xanga The Rally tonight began at Foster Auditorium, where everyone gathered and received candles to place in plastic cups for a vigil (I failed to keep mine lit and tossed it before I even made it to the front gate). Everyone filed passed the people on the hunger strike and thanked them for staying strong.Latoya Plummer began the rally as the emcee for the night, and [...] Mon, Oct 23 2006 Rally time change ayala920's Xanga Tonight's rally will commence at 6:30 instead of 8:00. In addition to the rally itself, there will also be a press conference and faculty march. I've been informed that there will be discussions of what to do next. Mon, Oct 23 2006 March to the Capitol ayala920's Xanga WOW! That's pretty much all I can say. Here are some brief tidbits that I typed while walking:9:16- We have officially begun the march.9:23- We've made it to K street. I can't believe how many people are here9:25- To say this is an emotional experience would be an understatement. I can't believe how many people are here. I never realized the amount of support we [...] Sat, Oct 21 2006 Plans for Monday
ayala920's Xanga We held a student-only meeting tonight. Originally we planned to meet outside, then we moved to Fowler Hall, but the huge crowd forced us to move to Marketplace (in my opinion, the perfect place to hold a meeting). Lots was discussed, but I'm keeping hush on the contents of the meeting for now. Read Mishkazen's blog for more information a little later.Plans for [...] Sat, Oct 21 2006 |
