Marlee Matlin's voice wasn't heard on the show last night
Patty's Blog Samantha Harris allowed to talk but Marlee Matlin gets dubbed over on Dancing’s premiereI don't understand why MM was dubbed either...didn't the producers ever watch her on the "L Word" show? Also, I like the fact that a mainstream person, not one from the Deaf community, was the one who was indignant and irked about MM's dubbed clips.Anyway, aside from the dubs, I re...

They really did it! (DPN20)
Patty's Blog My sister Kathy and I lived in one of the row houses on the corner of West Virginia and Florida Avenues. Kathy was a cataloguer at the library on campus, and I was a statistical assistant for one of the Federal agencies downtown, some 20 minutes away by bus. We'd heard rumors about some students planning a protest on campus for a while. I thought the idea of such a con...

My New Toy!
Patty's Blog Guess what I found under the tree on Christmas Day? My new Amazon Kindle! I ordered the Kindle on November 25th, and according to my Amazon.com account, it arrived on December 22nd. Only, Newby got to the package first and decided to surprise me on Christmas Day. However, our holiday was still crazy-busy, so I did not get to use the Kindle until around the first week ...

True meaning of audism?
Patty's Blog For years, I've been struggling to understand the true meaning of audism. I first learned the word from my husband when he was in graduate school and studying to be a teacher of the Deaf.Ever since then, we've had debates and arguments over the use of the word. His belief is that the majority of hearing people the world over are born audists, while I believe they aren...

Patty's Blog Heh. So Newby and I are watching Kansas vs Oklahoma State college football on TV.Sometime in the 3rd quarter, a camera is panning across the field until it focuses on Martel Van Zant, the Oklahoma State player who is Deaf, and a guy who appears to be his sign language intepreter in a huddle on the sideline.Wow, we have the feeling that we're watching a private convers...

NaBloPoMo #1 - I am Deaf
Patty's Blog When I was about one year old, my parents first realized that something was amiss when they noticed that I did not respond or react normally every time there was a sudden sound or noise. At our family doctor's suggestion, they took me to the local chapter of Easter Seals and I had a hearing test. It was then they discovered that I was Deaf.At first, it was thought that...

A "Must-Have-It" For Every Deaf Household
Patty's Blog After reading (and chuckling) this blog entry, I must share something with you. Here goes...One Spring morning seven years ago, I came downstairs to the kitchen and found our two dogs standing in several inches of water. Instantly, I came to a horrifying realization: I'd accidentally left the master bathroom sink faucet running with the stopper down around midnight. I [...]

My iPhone Report!
Patty's Blog It's been a month since I got my iPhone, a surprise birthday present from Newby. It's been an interesting experience being an iPhone owner, both positive and negative. I have so much to cover about my iPhone that I probably won't remember all of them. However, I'll pick top five positives and top five negatives.Positives:1. It's a great travel accessory. In fact, it's [...]

Pink!
Patty's Blog After reading blogs and viewing vlogs on DeafRead.com concerning ASL and literary issues, I've been mulling over my own experiences with language development in my childhood years. Would you believe me if I told you that I remember the very first word I ever understood? Yes!A little background first...I was born profoundly Deaf to Hearing parents but the fact was not [...]

Saved By Technology!
Patty's Blog Last Thursday morning, before the Memorial Day weekend, we were scheduled to fly to New Mexico for a family reunion, with a stopover in DFW on the way. But when we arrived at the pre-boarding desk, we were told that flights out of DFW were being cancelled due to a severe thunderstorm and that we would need to make alternative arrangements if we wanted to arrive in New [...]

When it's a blessing to be Deaf
Patty's Blog I love movies. I am a movie addict. I probably watch 2-3 movies every day. When someone says, "I hated that movie!", I'm curious so I watch the movie. After watching the movie, I'm left wondering, "What's wrong with it?" Especially if it has the makings of a great movie having followed the rules of a good plot (introduction, conflict, resolution and conclusion). So I [...]

A Deaf character on a new Russian TV show
Patty's Blog A Russian version of the TV show, "Law & Order: SVU" opened recently, to great ratings, apparently. In the opening credits, a Deaf man can be seen using Russian sign language with his hearing sister. Link here. It's 8 minutes long. However, I have no idea what they're talking about though; only that it's a very tense scene.

A Plea to JKF's Husband
Patty's Blog Hello Dr. James Fernandes,Until recently, I didn't realize you were JKF's husband (I have no idea how to call your wife's name so I will call her "JKF" from now on here). The current students at Gallaudet University have no idea what you're like as a person, since you retired long before they arrived on campus, so it's probably why there is very little information [...]

A warm fuzzy feeling
Patty's Blog I woke up this morning. Of course, the very first thing that popped up in my mind after waking up was of the hunger strikers...I wonder how they are doing this morning...are they warm and protected enough against the climate?I immediately sign on my computer and check the weather forecast for Gallaudet. It will be in the 40's with rain today and tomorrow. Sunday, when [...]

A letter from a Deaf Stay-At-Home Wife
Patty's Blog This is my letter. I am not as eloquent as so many of those wonderful bloggers/vloggers are, so please bear with me.Since arriving home in Philly safely last Monday morning after a very inspiring weekend at Gallaudet, we have not had a good night's sleep. Like so many of the alumni who were on campus recently, we're now experiencing severe signs of post trauma stress. [...]

WE'RE GOING!!!!
Patty's Blog We're going to Gallaudet this weekend!! YAY!!I'm so happy and excited that we'll finally be able to show our pride and support for the protesters in a true physical way, not just virtual!I'm nervous, because it'll mean that I'll be stepping out of my "comfort zone" as a stay-at-home wife after so long. The last time I ever went to a major Deaf gathering was probably [...]

Oh my gosh!
Patty's Blog Never before I ever experienced such an explosion of virtual information coming this way about the protests at Gallaudet! If it wasn't for those amazing Deaf bloggers reporting live from Gallaudet, I don't think I would have taken the time to learn about tumultuous events currently occurring on campus.I lead a very sedate life in a surburban town outside Philadelphia.
