Deaf Kitchen Many of us Deafies post Christmas photos from our friends and family onto our fridges or some other place in our homes every year. Why is that? I have a theory here in this vlog, then welcome your thoughts and opinions as well!

Has Blogging Died?
Deaf Kitchen What has happened to several once-visible Deaf blogs/vlogs that are now in hibernation or are dead? This includes Deaf Kitchen, run by yours truly. Notwithstanding the recent April Fools' vlog [which by the way was recorded on March 31st *2007* but due to problems with uploading it in time for 4/1/07, had to be put on the dock for one year!], Deaf Kitchen's last pos...

CNN/Money Overlooks Deaf Community!
Deaf Kitchen Ft. Collins, CO. Columbia, MD. Naperville, IL. SugarLand, TX. Eden Prairie, MN. These are among the places rated best to live and/or to raise your family by CNN/Money. Sure, all these places have their positive attributes, but sadly CNN/Money overlooked one important factor--the ASL Nation's needs. We need a place with plentiful job opportunities, good schools [...]

Sioux Falls = Deaf Ghost Town?
Deaf Kitchen The next time you drive west on I-90 from Minnesota into South Dakota, be sure to stop at the rest area on the state line. There is a Welcome Center there, with information and brochures on attractions and tours throughout the state of South Dakota. Look for a brochure entitled "Deaf Ghost Town: A Driving Tour of Sioux Falls." In it will be houses where Deaf people [...]

Language Not Important?? Duhhh!
Deaf Kitchen To those people in Mississippi who still contend that students at the Mississippi School for the Deaf should learn to make do without sign language-proficient teachers, I have some visual evidence that is 20+ years old:The message reads: "Some things have to change regarding your behavior + attitude. You are 16-17 yrs old and act 11-12. If you want to stay in this [...]

5th Press Release for GU PR Machine
Deaf Kitchen The GU Administration PR Machine spun out 4 press releases yesterday: 1) Board painfully and regretfully terminates JKF; 2) Accountability; 3) IKJ's statement; and 4) JKF's statement. It seems they forgot a 5th press release--on behalf of the very agents that effected all this. I'm taking the liberty of writing up this missing press release...here goes:WASHINGTON, [...]

Call for Cease Fire
Deaf Kitchen Let's step back from the brink for a moment, before someone is seriously injured or damage is done to our beloved campus. Board, please CONFIRM a meeting to occur TODAY or, at worst, by Friday. In return, protesters please agree to not take over any more buildings on campus. All gates would continue to be peacefully blocked except the 6th Street gate, which is open [...]

Alumni Sign Up Sheet!
Deaf Kitchen One nice thing about this protest is that it is, in the words of Steffi Ellis ('97), organic--meaning that various groups are popping up, like mushrooms after a rainfall, to take charge of various logistics and operations. Witness the football players' takeover of the entire campus *apart* from the 300-400 occupants of Hall Memorial Building nearly 2 weeks [...]

UPDATED: Homecoming's On--in Frederick!
Deaf Kitchen Gallaudet's homecoming will be held at the Maryland School for the Deaf (my alma mater) in Frederick, MD tonight at 7pm! Details still fuzzy at this stage. UPDATE: Just the football game will be played at MSD, as far as is known. 2ND UPDATE: The football game will be played SATURDAY night, not Friday night. It is being labeled "just a football game," not [...]

Beware of Hill Knee!
Deaf Kitchen No, I'm not talking about Capitol Hill, where many people in DC were today, or will go to soon! I'm talking about Gallaudet's Hill...the small one leading down from Fowler Hall to the Florida Avenue gate. After standing and walking on this hill for much of Saturday night and most of Sunday, I started to develop pain in my knees. My Heart Bleeds for Gallaudet
Deaf Kitchen It was not a good feeling leaving campus at 4pm today. The euphoria of last night's faculty vote announcement was replaced today by the realization that JFK doesn't seem to be budging. In fact, things have gone from bad to worse with the homecoming furor and the appearance that no one seems to know what to do next. The students have spoken. The alumni have [...]

Top 10 Reasons Jane Should Resign
Deaf Kitchen One of the biggest challenges the protestors have had is articulating their message--not only to the outside media but also to various parts of the Gallaudet, and Deaf, communities. Sure enough, I've heard about 232 different reasons why Jane has to go. In an attempt to narrow it down, I asked 10 people on the street for their top reason that Jane should resign. Here [...]

Cup 'o Noodles
Deaf Kitchen Immediately to the right of the front gate (as you look at it from on campus), is a concession stand managed by alumnus Sean Markel, '00 and a bevy of diehard volunteers working around the clock. There is also a large grill that produces Skullburgers (which a number of people have claimed taste better than regular hamburgers). The food and drinks here are all FREE [...]

People Won't Leave!
Deaf Kitchen This amateur crowd-counter estimates over 1000 people at the front gate now, still euphoric after the faculty announcement an hour ago. The crowd includes a lot of students, alumni, faculty, and staff. Spirits are high. A modified Bison Song was sung, protest-themed. Crowd asked for, and got, an encore. Rally still going strong! Looking around again, I wonder if the [...]

The Faculty Have Spoken, Its Time for Staff
Deaf Kitchen MJ Bienvenu reported that the faculty's motion to demand that JKF resign passed by a 83% rate of faculty present! No reprisals--passed overwhelmingly. 80 voted loss of confidence in King, 60 no comment. 91% no confidence in Board! What's next? The staff need to speak up. You certainly have the numbers. Meet somewhere off campus and develop a joint statement. [...]

GUKCC--Something Fishy?
Deaf Kitchen Campus is relatively quiet right now, awaiting the faculty meeting at 4pm. Staff, the long-silent group (for fear of reprisals) finally seems to be stirring--the Friday night arrests were the trigger. Last night and at lunchtime today, the staff I talked with were ready to break their silence and come out in favor of the protest. Looks like this sleeping giant is [...]

The Other Gallaudet

Of course, that's where all the action is (not to mention the food, coffee, and hot chocolate!).Well, earlier tonite, I decided to take a look at the SAC (or is it IKJSAC? KJSAC? Naps...Then and Now
Deaf Kitchen Naps were a REQUIREMENT during DPN. I would catch a nap after pulling all-nighters. I would nap anywhere (in my SBG office, in my room, outside). Unfortunately, these naps would last a couple hours. FSSA Overwhelmed!
Deaf Kitchen But in a good way! Was talking with Matt Lockhart, one of the FSSA leaders, earlier today. Black Friday Aftermath
Deaf Kitchen Of course, one of the biggest topics since I got on campus 24 hours ago has been the Friday night arrests of 135 students and others. People are calling October 13th, 2006 the darkest and blackest day in Gallaudet history. An attorney was telling me earlier this afternoon that the Assistant Chief of DC Police kept telling him--right before the arrests started and [...]

All Eyes on the Board
Deaf Kitchen NAD President Bobbie Beth Scoggins' recent demand that the Gally BoT take over operations from the Administration only increases pressure on this body. The BoT is passing the buck, saying the Administration has the responsibility of keeping order on campus. BBS's argument is that there is no order on campus right now. It is strange that the BoT has not shown any [...]

NAD Demands BoT Action!
Deaf Kitchen Bobbie Beth Scoggins, President of the NAD, just spoke to the press at Gally's front gate. "NAD demands that Gallaudet's Board of Trustees take over the Administration of Gallaudet.
