Roberto Wirth, From Hotelier to Global Businessman
DeafNation I have heard that Roberto Wirth was like this, a superb hotel manager who spared not a single detail. Sure enough when I first met him got a glimpse.

Paris
DeafNation The next stop on my tour was a classic “must,” with Paris being a destination I wanted to spend several days in before flying home. Paris is an enormous city, and I was very fortunate to be able to stay with some friends while I was there in a fantastic location in the heart of the city.

Alone and American
DeafNation After a week filled with a lot of walking in my travels through London, Amsterdam, Groningen, Peiterburen, Rome, and an adrenaline-filled weekend in Interlaken, I have to admit I was getting pretty exhausted.A

Extreme Interlaken
DeafNation Interlaken is extremely beautiful and it has an interesting and in my opinion, inconsistent economy. The Swiss do not use the Euro as well, and instead they use the Swiss Franc (CHF).

Joel in Taiwan: Day Nine – From Hong Kong to the United...
DeafNation As predicted, the typhoon did indeed hit Taiwan after my arrival in Hong Kong. Needing to kill some time while waiting for my flight back to the United States, I ventured out into the city. The subway took me to Mong Kok Station, where the Goldfish Market is located.

When in Rome…
DeafNation When I flew into Rome, the first thing that hit me was the fact that it was so hot. I have to admit, my first impression of Rome wasn´t so good for several reasons. The first is not only is it an unbelievably hot and crowded city (think NYC in Florida), but...

Joel in Taiwan: Day Eight - My Last Day in Taiwan
DeafNation After my usual early wakeup, I checked out of the Grand Hotel (www.grand-hotel.org), the only traditional Chinese Palace Hotel in the world. I reflected back on my stay at this gorgeous hotel, and I thought about how I really liked the feeling of being “back” in Ancient China through this hotel.

Deaf too
DeafNation During my trip here, I’ve had the opportunity to meet several deaf people. While in Groningen, I had a terrific dinner with several deaf people from Amsterdam and perhaps some of the most enjoyable conversations I’ve had in such a long time.

Joel in Taiwan: Day Six – My Day with the Noodle Store Owner
DeafNation As I got up in the early morning, at 6:30 AM, I started thinking about Chao Chien-nan, the noodle shop owner whom I’d met earlier in the week. I wondered about how he was able to get up every morning at 4 AM, and open up his noodle store, at a time that most of us don’t ever get up.

Joel in Taiwan: Day Five – The Rice Paddy
DeafNation After getting a good night’s sleep on an authentic Japanese bed (it had a thin mattress) placed on a bamboo floor, Chou-Ying Yang came by to pick me up for the 3 hour drive to Guanshan. While on the road, we saw a “fruit stand” that only sold guava, and pulled over.

Joel in Taiwan: Day Four – Trip to Hualien
DeafNation The Taiwanese dawn greeted me as I got up at the very early hour of 5 AM, eager for my trip to Hualien, Taiwan. Even though I had been getting up early the last few days here in Taipei, what made this early wakeup call different was that I had to be at Taipei’s Songshan Airport by 6 AM for my flight to Hualien.

Joel in Taiwan: Day Three – Touring Taipei
DeafNation I got up at 5 AM, after only 4 hours of sleep. Even though plenty of sleep is good for the body, there’s only so much to do in Taiwan that I couldn’t afford to waste time sleeping.

Joel in Taiwan: Day Two – My First Day in Taiwan
DeafNation After beginning my adventure in Hong Kong in a very spectacular way, I hated to be leaving the city after only a short time there. But Taiwan was next on my list, and I knew it would more than make up for the short visit to Hong Kong.

Greenland - Day Nine
DeafNation Today was another long day of travelling, and it was finally the end of our long journey going Ilulissat, Greenland, Nuuk, and to Reykjavik, Iceland. Our flight was extremely smooth and peaceful, and I was extremely impressed with AirGreenland’s flight crew, as they were always courteous and made sure our bags were safe, a basic service far better than what I experien...

Greenland - Day Four
DeafNation After a great night (day) sleep in the igloo, I was ready for a tour of the icebergs. Seeing the icebergs up close is so much better than seeing them on TV, even if it is HDTV! Due to high activity, Ilulissat has the most icebergs in the sea more than any town...

Greenland - Day Three
DeafNation Today was a day of travel for us, as we continued to make our way further north in Greenland. We had a great breakfast to start the day, and another guest was extremely nice enough to take us to the airport on the other side of town.
