Thirsty for online videos or vlogs by deaf?

On October 14, in midst of the Gallaudet University protests, I launched a page to easily share YouTube videos created by deaf folks called DeafRead Video. I was surprised to see how many people added themselves (and possibly others) as YouTube users in such a short time. Currently, the page has 26 users.

FYI, there are a few more users that I still have in the database, but haven’t activated because their profile did not contain any videos. I did not want to confuse viewers. If you’ve added yourself, but don’t see your username on the menu, that may be because videos need to be added first.

Anyways, enjoy the page that brings hundreds of videos created by the deaf (and a CODA, I think :) ). If you’ve got videos in your YouTube profile, add yourself!

I have not made vlogs yet but intend to someday…Jared said something to the degree that YouTube has the worst video quality and he mentions that Google video is the only provider that allows captions. Shouldn’t we stand behind Google to support them for their use of higher video quality and the use of captions?

When you upload video clips to websites that host video clips free of charge, they may be re-encoded to a lower quality. If your preference is for top-notch video quality, you will need to host them on your own internet hosting service.

I wouldn’t go as far as saying that the quality on youTube or Google Video is terrible but it’s barely sufficient for viewing the hand movements of ASL.

My preference is Google Video over youTube due to their built-in feature for captioning. I think the quality between them is very similar so I’m going with a set of features that are important to me personally.

Another reason why I stay with Google Video/youTube over the other video hosting websites is because that’s where the majority of the viewers go on the internet if they want to search/view videos. I want an audience for my video clips and to make them easily discoverable by unknown future visitors.
